Saurabh Malpani, B.Arch. (Principal, Co-founder)
Saurabh Malpani is a renowned architect, as well as one of the principals and co-founders of Artha Studio, a sustainable design firm, located in Pune, Maharashtra. In his more than ten years of architectural practice, he has apprenticed with great masters, such as Geoffrey Bawa in Sri Lanka and Alvaro Siza in Portugal. Saurabh received his Diploma in Architecture from the School of Architecture at CEPT University, Ahmedabad in 2003. He had the opportunity to study at Technical University of Delft (1999-2000) through CEPT University’s international student exchange program. He also received further training at Faculty of Architecture at University of Porto (2002-2003).
He co-founded Artha Studio in 2008 with Ashka Naik, a friend and a contemporary. The studio has received many regional and national awards, and has been frequently recognized for its commitment to smart and sustainable design practice. Indian Architects and Builders selected Saurabh as the Young Designer of Year 2009 in the ‘Architectural category’ in February 2009.
Ashka Naik, LEED AP BD+C, B.I.D, M.A.P.D. (Principal, Co-founder)
Ashka Naik currently resides in the US, and leads Artha Studio’s international efforts. She recently served as the Executive Director of HEET (in 2014-15), a nonprofit providing clean energy and energy efficiency solutions to underserved communities in the US. Before joining HEET, she was a program director of national initiatives on climate change at Second Nature, Inc., a climate action nonprofit located in Massachusetts, US. In her 5-year tenure, she built Second Nature’s strategic initiatives that empowered under-resourced and minority-serving institutions to develop expertise and framework to become sustainability champions in their communities, and eventually achieve complete carbon neutrality. Before joining Second Nature, she worked as the sustainability coordinator for the Harvard University Office for Sustainability, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, US. In India, she worked with the Vastu-Shilpa Foundation, a nonprofit focused on architectural design and research, under the leadership of Architects B. V. Doshi and Yatin Pandya.
Her love for organic, local, and sustainable food systems, and her commitment to clean energy independence have made her deeply involved in the local sustainability efforts and initiatives. She now serves on the Executive Board of Lexington Community Farm Coalition, Inc. (LexFarm); she is a member of the Town Committee on sustainability; and with her husband’s partnership, has converted their home into a 100% solar dwelling. Ashka received her Bachelor of Interior Architecture/Design from the Faculty of Design at CEPT University in India, and Master of Product/Industrial Design from the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design at University of Central England (now Birmingham City University) in the UK. She also received further graduate level education in environmental management from Harvard Extension School at Harvard University in the US.
