We design the Meaningful (arthapurna)

Sustainable design for us is not a style but a sensibility that propels us to put forth simple and feasible design solutions that are in tune with the site and its context. We are particularly cognizant of our responsibility towards ecology, economy, and society, hence wise employment of time, energy and resources forms our simple key to unlock the complexities of each project. We deeply believe in the power of collaboration and thus our creation is always positively influenced by the user, artisans, context, available materials, and technologies. While doing so, we also strive to maintain the simple and noble yet silent character of architectural design. We believe everything is linked- the mind, the body, every living being, world, earth, sky, sun, and everything in between. We are wise enough to respect continuity by proposing solutions that are in harmony with the past yet relevant in the present.

Practice and Process

We work with precision and method, through a critical regionalist vision that equips us to make suitable decisions concerning the local climate, topography, light, and tectonic form. We appreciate the extensive involvement of the user in making timely prudent decisions regarding short-term cost management. This further enables us to improve the experiential quality of a space in line with the estimated expense. The central idea is that seeds (collective ideas) for the long-term enrichment of a space are sown well in time for the user to reap fruits for a lasting period.

Our design process includes alternating between macro and micro perspectives to deliver spaces that provide spatial richness through mindful detailing. Constant introspection about value addition forms the heart of our process. Our goal is to create spaces that are beyond the mere pragmatic confines. We are continuously experimenting and therefore, always evolving. We are neither in a rush nor at rest. We are considerably agile to amends and agile enough to make amends, thus respecting the aspiration of the user and the economy.

We practice agility by adopting a site-responsive approach that respects the native environment, local artisans, craft, and culture by encouraging collaboration and by incorporating ecological practices (Hamarawala Green) that merge traditional knowledge with current design movements and technologies.

For us drafting is just a tool to convey instructions, primary design development happens through sketching, detailed discussions, and with physical and digital model-making. We love to deepen our understanding of materials, scale, and proportions with the help of relentless study models. As a studio, we like to challenge the “cookie-cutter” production of buildings, and the same is reflected in our holistic and attentive approach to work.

To put it simply, we are careful, conscious, and responsible yet spontaneous, free, and bold.
